STATEMENT

 

by the U.S. State Department*

 

“IT REMAINS the U.S. position that the part of Jerusalem which came under the control of Israel in the June War, like other areas occupied by Israel, is occupied territory and therefore subject to the provisions of international law governing the rights and obligations of an occupying power.

“Israel is a party to the Geneva Convention on the protection of civilian persons in time of war. We, therefore, consider the Govern­ment of Israel and its armed forces obligated to abide by the provisions of the convention in its actions in the occupied territories.”
