Trip to Palestine 2002 Chronology Tuesday June 18 Left Athabasca 8:00 AM for Edmonton. Departed Edmonton 12:05 PM to Toronto, Frankfurt, Tel Aviv. Wednesday June 19 Jerusalem Arrived Tel Aviv 3:00 PM. Traveled to Jerusalem by shuttle bus. Stayed at Knights Palace Hotel inside the walls of the Old City. Thursday June 20 Jerusalem Toured Old City and made contact with ISM (International Solidarity Movement). Friday June 21 To Ramallah Reported to the Faisal Youth Hostel in East Jerusalem by the Damascus Gate of the Wall. Training by LeAnne Clausen of Iowa in how to behave and interact with Palestinians, Israeli soldiers, Israeli Border police, and Jewish settlers. Dos and Don’ts of life in Palestine and the military occupation forces. A call came in from Ramallah that the Palestinian Authority Headquarters were going to be attacked again. I volunteered to go into the compound to act as a deterrent. Trip to Ramallah. Spent the night in the compound. Saturday June 22 Balata Returned to Jerusalem for the rest of training and preparation for a trip to Nablus that had been (and still is) under severe curfew. Need for ambulance riders and a couple to live in a house under threat of demolishment. Marissa McLaughlin and I volunteered to stay in house. Others went to the medical centre in Nablus to help. Tanks entered the camp around midnight. Rolled up and down the street and left. Sunday June 23 Balata Met the family members, got their history. Heard about the youngest son who killed himself in a suicide bomb attack. Early morning of June 24, tanks rumbled into the camp and up and down the street in from of the house. Set off sonic stun grenades, and started firing their machine guns. Learned my first Arabic: Yahoud debaaye, Jewish tanks. Monday June 24 Balata Got up early to survey the damage the tanks had done to the street and sidewalks. Broken water lines, damaged canopies. No tanks the night of Monday. Tuesday June 25. Balata Discovered Internet Café in Balata. Tanks and a bulldozer in the afternoon advancing and retreating, taunting the kids to throw rocks. Some did. The tank opened fire, 9 wounded, 2 seriously. That night Neta stayed with us in the house. A tank, an APC, and a D9 armored bulldozer entered camp, up and down. Thought this was it. But they moved out after an hour or so of terrorizing the camp. Wednesday June 26. Balata Tanks, APC, bulldozer through the camp again 2 to 3 am. Found out that a young man 17 years old had been killed by a sniper from the APC at about 300 meters, at night. Head severed by first shot. This killing was a murder. He was unarmed, just too curious about what the bulldozer was doing. Thursday June 27 Balata The night of Thursday to Friday, no tanks. Friday June 28 Jerusalem, Knights Palace Hotel. Saturday June 29. Ramallah. Met father of U of A faculty member. Night at hospital. Sunday June 30. Ramallah Amaari Refugee camp. Injured toddler at hospital. Monday July 1. Hebron Back to Jerusalem and on to Hebron. Stayed at CPT. Tuesday July 2 Hebron Tried to help farmers, got chased off by an APC. Wednesday July 3 Hebron Tried again with the mayor (Palestinian) of Halhul. Got promise from Israeli officer. Thursay July 4 Hebron Stayed at hospital as deterrent to troops entering. Friday July 5 Jerusalem Knights Palace Hotel Saturday July 6 Jerusalem Knights Palace Hotel Shopping & getting ready to leave Sunday July 7 Athabasca Edmonton at 7:00 p.m., home at 10:00 p.m. |
