Welcome to the temporary Home Page of Yanoun.org. This site will collect material about the besieged village of Yanoun (also spelled Yanun). I spent 18 days and nights in the village, June 17 to July 4, 2003, as part of the commitment of the international community to keep a presence there. I loved it.

Over the years, starting in 1996, messianic fundamentalist Jewish settlers have committed crimes against the villagers of Yanoun: murder, beatings, destruction of a generator, stealing land and animals, day and night harassment, poisoning sheep and goats, mass destruction of olive trees, breaking and entering and trashing houses, until finally in October of 2002, the families packed their furniture, equipment, and clothing and left.

Due to courageous action of Israeli and international peace activists the families were induced to return. I responded to a call from the IWPS, the International Women's Peace Service in Palestine, in March of 2003, for volunteers to come to Yanoun to stay for an extentended period.

The mayor of Yanoun, Abdul Latif, has a map hanging on a wall in the living room of his house. He has been working on this documentation of the settler encroachment on village lands for many years. I took a photo of the map with my digital camera while I was there; then using Adobe Illustrator on my laptop succeeded in getting the Arabic on the map translated to English. The sons of Imr Zuhady: Mossab, Monthir, and Mohammed, did the translating for me, and I typed in the English.

Each of the transgressions of Jewish settlers against the villagers -- including a shooting of a resident of Lower Yanoun by a settler just a few days ago -- will be represented on the map as a circled numeral. Clicking on the numeral will bring up the story of that incident.

At this writing, Feb 14, 2004, all 8 incidents are available. Try it and comment.
