Union League

The United States Marshal for Idaho, D. S. Payne, came to Bannack in August, 1863, asking for a recommendation for the office of Deputy United States Marshal for the region east of the mountains in Idaho Territory. Nathaniel Langford, president of the Union League, asked the members to vote for a candidate in a secret ballot. All 30 members of the Union League chose Henry Plummer for the office. Langford refused to forward the members' unanimous recommendation. You may read about this in more detail in Chapter 23 of Langford's book. (Use your browser BACK button to return).
