Map Station 1: Over Nez Perce Pass
Henry Plummer left the Elk City area of Idaho with Charles Reeves in September of 1862. It is almost certain they took the old Nez Perce trail over the Bitterroot mountains. Granville Stuart met them at Beaver Tail Hill on the Clark's Fork between Hell Gate (Missoula) and Gold Creek. The date of this meeting was very likely September 10, 1862. As Stuart described the two men in his diary, "They [Plummer and Reeves] rode two good horses and had another packed with their blankets and provisions." Thus Plummer must have arrived in the Bitterroot Valley around September 8, 1862.
