NOVEMBER 18, 1862. I have concluded to go to the Beaverhead mines with James and open a butcher shop during the winter. Woody will run the grocery outfit.

NOVEMBER 19. Started for the mines with the ox teams loaded with goods and supplies of all kinds. James and I rode horseback and Bratton drove the wagon. Reece Anderson will remain in charge of the property left at the little town of American Fork.

NOVEMBER 22. We arrived at the mines and at once moved into our log cabin. The village is now called Bannack. We have fixed up our cabin quite cozy and home like. There is a fire place in one corner, two bunks against the wall, a couple of shelves and a calico curtain does service for a cupboard, another shelf holds our five books and James's tobacco pouch and pipe. The table and some stools complete the outfit.

NOVEMBER 23. The building which we contracted for the butcher shop is also finished and we begin business at once. Most of Fisk's train is located here and quite a number of others among them, Henry Plummer, Charlie Reeves, Louis Cossette, the Burchett family, and "Buz" Caven, and his charming wife.
